Gaining popularity in the last 10 years, MMA is a contact fitness activity that amps up training for strength, endurance, and stamina.
Mixed Martial Art or MMA has normally been viewed as a male-dominated sport. Not surprising, as the physical aspects of the activity focuses on capturing or escaping from arm and leg holds. Yet as with how things change with the times, there are more females who are picking up MMA. Ronda Rousey, Jessica Aguilar, and Sarah Kaufman are some of the ladies who have brought attention to the females in this fitness scene.
Breaking Down MMA
As its name suggests, Mixed Martial Arts incorporates movements various martial arts disciplines. These include boxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and wrestling, all of which are traditionally viewed as male-dominated sports.
However, the number of females taking up MMA has increased over the past decade. Singaporean MMA fighter Angela Lee is living proof that females are more than equipped to take on MMA—she became the youngest-ever ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion this year, at the age of 19 years.
Co-founder of local MMA gym FaMA and a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt holder Zoro Moreira Jr says, ‘All it takes is a paradigm shift for people to see that women are strong, that they can take a hit and aren’t afraid to get a couple of bruises. There is absolutely nothing stopping a woman from being able to fight as long as she believes she can.’
MMA Fitness Plus
According to Moreira, majority of FaMA’s students have found MMA largely beneficial to improving their stamina and flexibility, while some have even ventured into long-distance running or obstacle races such as the Spartan Race.
MMA is a dynamic workout session. One hour of MMA provides a larger calorie burn that jogging for an hour. At the same time, it builds muscle strength without the added bulk of weight lifting.
Throwing some punches or handling a good wrestle is also a great way to release stress and frustration. This then activates endorphins, and creates a feeling of happiness.
On top of building strength and fitness, MMA also equips all practitioners with a life skill—learning self-defence raises self-confidence, and empowers the female.
Step into MMA
If you are just beginning on your fitness journey, there is nothing to worry as MMA is about building your fitness. A background in sports or martial arts will help accelerate learning, although it is not necessary. The first lesson will cover basic moves such as striking and grappling.
Moreira explains, ‘Striking is usually made up of muay thai, boxing, and karate, where punching and kicking is involved. Grappling comes from Brazilian jiu jitsu, wrestling, and judo; this is where you’ll practice takedowns and submissions. A typical MMA class will teach you how to put all of these together.’
